Dewatering is the removal of water from solid material or soil through centrifugation, filtration, or similar solid-liquid separation processes. Dewatering is the accepted term used to describe removal or draining of groundwater or surface water from a construction environment by pumping or evaporation. Within a construction site, dewatering may be implemented before subsurface excavation (for foundations, shoring, or cellar space) to lower the water table. The use of submersible "dewatering" pumps, centrifugal pumps, eductors, or engagement of vacuum to well points submerged in the ground.
Construction of buildings, power stations, ports and many other major structures requires significant below water table excavation into water-bearing soils. Lowering the water level also increases the effective weight of the soil and consolidates the soil layers. Reducing lateral loads on sheeting and bracing is another way of use. Ground Water Control
Efficient ground water control reduces operational risks on site. A water-logged site not only results in delays (incurring penalty charges) but it can also be a hazardous work environment. Groundwater pressure can collapse workings without warning. Effective groundwater control is, therefore, essential where the depth of the proposed excavation is likely to be below the standing water level. Sykes Dewatering has the unrivalled expertise and specialist equipment to deliver the best dewatering solution.
Wellpoint dewatering systems enable you to lower the groundwater table for large and deep construction sites. It is a very flexible, tried and tested system. Water from high permeable soils is pumped from Wellpoints, installed along the trench of the site. Wellpoints are jetted in and distanced to obtain efficient drawdown against lowest capacity. The Wellpoints with integral strainers are joined to transparent flexible hoses, connected by quick release couplers to the main header pipe. An efficient wellpoint dewatering system uses self-priming, vacuum assisted centrifugal pumps such as the proven Sykes pumps. This is one of the most economical, flexible and stable methods of dewatering available today. Sykes Dewatering provides a complete service: from site investigation and calculations, using our knowledge of previous subsoil conditions, to recommending and installing appropriate dewatering equipment. Typically, we install a number of Wellpoints, with tubes 40mm to 60mm in diameter, protected by a filter screen - collecting underground water efficiently. Our Wellpoint dewatering pumps are fitted as standard with high capacity vacuum pumps, enabling maximum drawdown and the optimal number of Wellpoints to be installed. The most preferred pumps in the Middle East for this application are the Sykes WP150/60, fully automatic general purpose unit, powered by either diesel or electric motor.

When excavation is required below 7-9 metres in water-saturated ground, we can install a multi-stage Wellpoint dewatering system.
Wellpoint Dewatering - Progressive Line Installation
For pipeline installations and other similar continuous applications, a progressive or roll along dewatering system is utilised alongside the route, excavating and dewatering in advance of laying the the pipe. Equipment from a previously dewatered and backfilled section is reintroduced at the head of the pipeline installation, ensuring equipment is efficiently re-used. Although the principle is uncomplicated, significant Wellpoint Dewatering expertise is required to implement the most reliable and efficient ground water control systems. Dewatering - Deep Bored Pumping Well
Inorder to lower the water table below 9 metres, the conventional vertical Wellpoint Dewatering in stages isn’t always economically feasible. So, as an alternative, we also provide tube well or bored well dewatering. A hole is bored to the necessary depth a mesh screen lining at the bottom of the well allows water to accumulate. This is then removed by a submersible pump installed in the well. Dewatering pumps typically used for deep well gravity drainage include Pumpex electric submersible units: these pumps permit excavation down to 22m in a single stage.
Deep Well Dewatering
Deep Well dewatering systems enable the groundwater table to be lowered to a significant depth. A submersible dewatering pump is installed at the base of the well, with a casing, which generally has a minimum diameter of 150 mm. Discharge pipes from the submersible pumps of a number of neighbouring wells are connected to a single delivery main. Water is raised from the well by a multi-staged submersible pump which is able to deliver a high head relative to the depth of the well. Deep Well groundwater control systems are used to lower groundwater levels to deliver stable working conditions within excavation projects. A Deep Well system consists of an multiple widely spaced bored wells fitted with multi-stage electric submersible pumps. Deep Well systems operate successfully in a range of soil conditions including gravel to fine sands. This dewatering approach is predominantly suited to deeper excavations or where ‘artesian groundwater pressures’ threaten base stability. Equally, the use of Deep Wells can also be effective for small amounts of draw down but over large areas, such as for digging long trenches.
Deep Wells typically consist of inclined or vertical bores, usually between 200mm to 300mm diameter placed through the strata requiring dewatering or pressure relief. A strong uPVC well casing will be placed in the borehole, including screened and cased sections. The installation of this filter pack to both maximise well yield and inhibit the movement of fines. After well development, airlifting within the well casing is carried out before a suitable electric submersible borehole pump is installed.
Open dewatering systems allow the groundwater table to be lowered in cohesive and low permeable soils. Water is pumped off directly from sumps (ditches) along the ends of the slopes of the excavation site. A suction hose with strainer is simply placed in the sump and the water is primed and discharged by the pump. The open dewatering system is simple for installation and to operate. Typically, open dewatering system would use self priming or vacuum assisted centrifugal pumps such as the Sykes WP150 and GP range of pumps which are ideally suited for this open dewatering application.

Dewatering - Centrifugal Pumps
The Sykes Pumps range of robust and highly reliable centrifugal pumps are designed for handling high volumes of water. Our centrifugal pumps convert the input power to kinetic energy in the liquid by accelerating the liquid by an impeller. A vacuum is created at the impellers eye which continuously draws water into the centrifugal pump. Water enters the pump through the eye of the impeller which rotates at high speed. This water is then accelerated radially outward from the pump chasing. Centrifugal pumps are used for large discharge through smaller heads. The centrifugal pumps available from Sykes Pumps are fully automatic and dry priming.
